Ο άντρας πάσχει από μια σπάνια γενετική ασθένεια, η οποία ονομάζεται νευροινωμάτωση και προκαλεί πολύ πόνο, περιορισμένη όραση και σε μερικές περιπτώσεις καρκίνο.

Εξαιτίας της ασθένειας αυτής άρχισε να γεμίζει μεγάλα εξογκώματα σε όλο του το σώμα από την ηλικία των 15 ετών. Όπως λέει αποκλειστικά στην Daily Mail είναι τόσο επώδυνο όλο αυτό. Κοιμάται με ρούχα και το πρωί ξυπνάει και είναι γεμάτος αίματα από τις πληγές.

Οι πόνοι είναι φρικτοί, ενώ μόνο στο αριστερό του μάγουλο δεν έχει εξογκώματα. Ο άντρας έχει υποβληθεί σε πολλές επεμβάσεις στην καρδιά, στα μάτια και στον λαιμό, ενώ εξαιτίας της ασθένειας δεν μπορεί να αναπνεύσει.

Παρόλα αυτά, δεν το βάζει κάτω και προσπαθεί να είναι αισιόδοξος. Η συνάντηση του με τον πάπα του έδωσε κουράγιο. «Κράτησε λιγότερο από ένα λεπτό η αγκαλιά του, αλλά για μένα έμοιαζε με αιωνιότητα», είπε συγκεκριμένα.

When he is not working Mr Riva rides his bikes around the village. He is also a keen football fan and often goes to football matches or out for pizza with former classmates and friends
